The educational landscape of the U.S. has been seriously affected by a period of stagnation in the eyes of many of us involved in the educational reform movement. The appointment of a new Secretary of Education is always a time when those of us who feel the political elite are not doing what is best for the students of the U.S. come together in our hope the newly appointed individual will look to make major changes to the way the public school system is operated in the future; for myself, the appointment of Betsy DeVos as the Secretary for Education has given me a reason to be optimistic the majority in the U.S. will soon have the freedom of choice now seen in many states throughout the Union.

The name Betsy DeVos is one I have been aware of for many years as I have taken a greater interest in the way the educational system is operated in the U.S. with the majority of my knowledge of the education reformer based on the fact Secretary DeVos has a family history of educators running through her family. What impressed me most about the appointment of Mrs. DeVos is the fact her own mother was an educator in the Michigan public school system and encouraged the young Betsy to become an advocate for at-risk students within the Michigan school system. In my opinion, this experience dating back to the youth of Betsy DeVos marks her out as one of the most experienced individuals involved in the education reform system in the U.S., particularly as she has been one of the leading lights in the reform movement since it was seen as a controversial subject for many.

As the former head of The Windquest Group used by herself and her husband, billionaire Dick DeVos to make investments and run their own charitable foundations, I believe Betsy DeVos can make a positive impact on the way the public school system is operated in the U.S. The history of the education reform movement dates back more than half a century with few of those involved in the movement when it was seen as a positive form of activism achieving as much as Betsy DeVos. One of the most startling aspects of the work completed by Betsy DeVos is her impact on the political landscape in a number of different states where I was pleased to see she managed to cross party lines and inspire the majority to find success in new educational policies of school choice and voucher systems for all to enjoy.

Betsy DeVos Seeks New Ways Of Using Philanthropy To Help As Many As Possible

I first became aware of Betsy DeVos through her work as an activist for the education reform movement who have been traveling across the U.S. seeking to establish a range of new programs in different areas of school choice, vouchers and charter schools. The charter school campaigns have been a major part of the work of Betsy DeVos who has not only fought to establish and maintain the Detroit Charter School system, but also established the West Michigan Aviation Academy that provides a simple and effective way of educating young people from a range of backgrounds about the aviation industry; a secondary advantage of this form of school is the fact the local area of Grand Rapids will become a hub for the aviation industry in the region.

One of the greatest aspects of the work Mrs. DeVos that I feel is important has been completing in recent years is her attempt to develop a greater understanding of the school voucher systems she has championed for a number of decades. One of the main areas the newly installed Secretary of Education for the U.S. has hoped to change attitudes is in the way the public school system is operated, including a dedication to children instead of the unions that have a major say in how the youth of the U.S. are educated.

In the Grand Rapids area of Michigan, Betsy DeVos is well known for her dedication to the local community in many different forms. Alongside her husband Dick, the Calvin College educated daughter of industrialist Edward Prince has impressed me by playing a major role in making sure the local community across the state of Michigan have access to arts and education based opportunities to better every aspect of the state. Betsy DeVos served on the board of the Kennedy Center for the Arts under then President George W. Bush and used her role to make sure Michigan was given an arts based program that includes the ArtsPrize voted on by members of the public.

Alongside her work in education and as a philanthropist, which has seen she and her husband provide more than $11 million in support to different charitable groups in 2015 alone, Mrs. DeVos has also looked to develop her business career as an investor with The Windquest Group. I believe the interests of Betsy DeVos show her progressive approach to all aspects of life as she has not only looked to create a number of business opportunities in Michigan, but also found ways of backing new technologies such as boxed water supplies and green energy technologies. Arizona Entrepreneur Jason Hope Fights Atherosclerosis Through Huge Donation

The root of all aging?

Mr. Hope is no stranger to medical research. Since he was a child, the entrepreneur and polymath has had an almost compulsive interest in medicine and how technology can enhance treatments and cures.

Always abreast of the latest trends in medical research, Mr. Hope knew that, increasingly, the consensus of the medical community is coming to the position that the same underlying processes that cause atherosclerosis, namely inflammatory damage and the immune response designed to repair it, are the underlying cause for many, if not most of the diseases associated with aging.

This insight has led Mr. Hope to the conclusion that, by funding atherosclerosis research, he’s killing two birds with one stone. Atherosclerosis itself is directly responsible for the most lethal diseases in America. Heart attack, stroke and even the worst sequelae of diabetes, such as gangrene requiring amputation, are a direct result of arterial disease. However, if the medical community can arrive at a complete understanding of the entire clinical processes behind atherosclerosis, the potential bounty is much more than just a severe reduction in the biggest killer diseases. It may be something akin to the Fountain of Youth.

Today, nearly every condition associated with aging, from wrinkled skin to arthritis to progressive reductions in organ function, are hypothesized to be related to inflammation and the body’s immune response to it. If sufficient insight into these processes can be gained, it may be possible to extend average life expectancy to much closer to the hypothesized maximum human lifespan of around 125 years. Such a scenario could see the average person living, in shockingly good health, until 100 years old or beyond, with total independence.

Recently, the SENS Foundation, a non-profit center for biomedical research, announced that it has received a $500,000 donation from Arizona entrepreneur Jason Hope. Hope gave the large donation with the stipulation that it be used for research into atherosclerosis and the underlying processes that lead to it. For its part, the SENS foundation said that Mr. Hope’s magnanimous donation would be put to good use, considerably enhancing the foundation’s ability to fund atherosclerosis research over the next couple of years.
