During the past few months, minority communities all over America have been facing an increased amount of discrimination. This has come along with the recent Presidential election, and has increased because of the amount of support they are getting from the party in power.

The recent presidential pardon that is being granted to Joe Arpaio is also something that will lead those discriminating to think that their actions are validated.

Arpaio was a controversial figure who spent twenty five years at the position of the Maricopa County Sheriff. During this time, he was involved with a number of violations and illegal activities. He was known for his strong views against immigrants and those who were coming from Latin American Communities. He would bribe juries to get them to rule in his favor so that people belonging to this community could get longer sentences. He was also known for the harsh condition that he kept the prisons that he ran in. The people in these prisons were denied their basic necessities and were forced to live in inhumane conditions.

These acts that he committed gained him a lot of eyeballs, with some complimenting his style of policing, claiming that it would help the country, and the others, actually seeing the discrimination for what it was, and opposing it.

In November last year, the Arizona district judge permitted the pardon that was being granted to Joe Arpaio. Arpaio had been a long time supporter of the Republican Party and did support Donald Trump.

He had donated surplus amounts towards the Trump Presidency campaign and proclaimed himself to be fighting for the benefit of the people, all while committing several crimes. They also shared some of the same ideologies, particularly about immigrants and people belonging to minority communities. Read more: Michael Lacey | Crunchbase and Phoenix New Times | Wikipedia

Arpaio had several instances where he was known to have falsely imprisoned people on the basis of their actions, or even if they belonged to a certain community that he opposed, even if the person had done nothing wrong.

Two people who had to witness this kind of discrimination were Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, who were falsely imprisoned after they released an article that outlines all the wrongful acts that Arpaio had been committing.

Lacey and Larkin then decided to sue Arpaio and received a settlement of three million from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department. They then decided to use this money to start a foundation that would fight against corrupt and racist people in the political systems, and to ensure that people are able to assert their basic human rights.

In light of this presidential pardon of Joe Arpaio, the unrest in the minds of the American minority communities has increased. Lacey and Larkin were one of the reasons which led to the conviction of Joe Arpaio, but this presidential pardon that is being granted shows that the political system in the country is not in favor of the people, but rather corrupt officials that have a lot of money.

But Lacey and Larkin are not turning back. They are continuing their fight against Arpaio and all the wrong that he has inflicted upon people.
